WAILUKU, Hawaii _ A Hawaii jail where a riot broke out in March is operating with less than half the normal number of corrections officers. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Sunday that as few as 83 of 170 guards regularly report to work at the Maui Community Correctional Center in Wailuku. Corrections officers say some guards are working 60 to 80 hours per week. One guard says the National Guard may be required to help staff the facility. A spokeswoman says “all possible options” will be explored. SENT: 275 words.
HAWAII MEETING-REPORTER BARRED
HILO, Hawaii _ A journalist in Hawaii was banned from covering what a newspaper contends was a public meeting but the U.S. Army said was not open to all. West Hawaii Today reported Saturday that its reporter was banned from a meeting Thursday in Hilo between the Army and community members to discuss historic resources at Pohakuloa Training Area and Kawaihae Military Reservation. An Army spokesman says all attendees were consulting parties or guests of those parties. SENT: 250 words.
