Field hockey: William Paterson 1, WestConn 0
WAYNE, N.J. — Despite a solid offensive effort from junior forward Morgan Matthews of Bethel and an equally impressive debut from rookie Olivia Moore, the WestConn field hockey team was edged at non-conference opponent William Paterson, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.
“We had great defensive work today by our backs and goalkeeper. We played a more competitive second half but needed to capitalize on our scoring opportunities and corners,” said Colonial head coach Dani McDonnell.
Sophomore goalie Neve Manion finished with four saves for the visitors, while Mallory Rickerhauser turned aside a pair of shots for William Paterson.
The lone goal of the contest came less than less than 13 minutes into the second half when Kristin Freas-Papa converted a penalty stroke chance.
With the loss, the Colonials dropped to 1-1 overall. They began the season with a 4-0 victory against Regis on Friday at the Westside Athletic Complex. William Paterson improved to 1-1.
WestConn returns to action for yet another non-league tilt at Elms on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Colonials return home for the conference opener against Castleton on Saturday at 11 a.m.
