Sheriff: Man shot by Alabama deputies seeking suspects

November 8, 2017

FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say deputies looking for burglary suspects in northwest Alabama wound up shooting a man who attempted to flee in a car.

Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton tells reporters the shooting occurred about 3 a.m. Wednesday in a rural area.

Deputies began looking for a vehicle after receiving calls about a burglary in Florence, and the sheriff says three officers stopped a car with three men inside.

Singleton says the driver tried to flee and an officer opened fire, striking the man in the shoulder. Officers also fired trying to shoot out tires on the vehicle.

Officials say 29-year-old Paul Hinkle of Birmingham was wounded. He was treated at a hospital and taken to jail with the two other men.

All three are being charged with theft and vehicle burglaries.
