Czech president to name government of experts

June 24, 2013

PRAGUE (AP) — Czech President Milos Zeman has suggested he is planning to name a new prime minister to form a government of experts to replace the center-right Cabinet of Petr Necas, who resigned amid a spy and bribery scandal.

Zeman will name his candidate Tuesday. He says such a government should contain representatives of labor unions and would be able to increase the minimum wage.

His announcement was condemned Monday by the outgoing coalition, which has approved parliamentary speaker Miroslava Nemcova as its candidate.

The new government will have to win a parliamentary confidence vote to rule until elections due in May 2014. That might not happen because both the coalition and the major opposition party oppose Zeman’s move.

Another option is for Parliament to call early elections.
