1,000 pounds of marijuana seized in Interstate 80 traffic stop

September 19, 2018

The Sarpy County Count Sheriff's Office says it seized about 1,000 pounds of marijuana from a vehicle on Interstate 80 on Wednesday.

Deputies from Sarpy and Douglas counties found approximately 1,000 pounds of marijuana inside a vehicle on Interstate 80 early Wednesday, the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office says in a news release.

The stop took place around 2:30 a.m. near mile marker 441, just west of the La Vista interchange.

The release doesn’t say what prompted a Sarpy County deputy to stop the vehicle. The deputy found the marijuana with help from a police dog and handler from Douglas County.

Both occupants of the vehicle, who are from out of state, were arrested on felony drug charges.

The seizure is one of the biggest in recent Nebraska history, said Cody Thomas, spokesman for the Nebraska State Patrol. In April, the Patrol seized 1,851 pounds of marijuana in an I-80 stop.
