GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) _ No. 17 College of Charleston won its 24th straight Saturday, cruising into the Southern Conference tournament by thrashing Western carolina 80-49.

Cedric Webber led the way with 17 points and 12 rebounds for Charleston (27-2), which can become the first team in 24 years to go undefeated in the Southern Conference and win the league tournament. Furman last did it in 1974-75.

Jermel President added 16 points, while Jody Lumpkin had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Cougars.

Michael Plavich led the Catamounts (8-21) with 13 points.

The Cougars led 12-0 and 21-4 en route to a 44-25 halftime lead.

Western Carolina had a pair of upset victories in the tournament, equaling their regular-season conference wins.

But Charleston’s defense limited the Catamounts to 29.8 percent shooting.

A 19-point halftime lead increased to 28 midway through the second half as coach John Kresse rested his starters down the stretch for the second straight tourney game.

The loss by Western Carolina matched the school record for defeats in a season with the 6-21 team of 1992-93.
