Cantwell Wins Shot Put at Athens Indoor
ATHENS, Greece (AP) _ American Christian Cantwell won the shot put and Michelle Freeman of Jamaica took the 60-meter hurdles at an IAAF indoor meet Sunday.
Cantwell, who missed the Athens Olympics last year after failing to make it past the U.S. trials, won with a throw of 69 feet, 11 inches. The 2004 world indoor champion finished ahead of Romania’s Guset Gheorghie, who threw 69-8 3/4. Dan Taylor of the United States came in third (65-5 1/2).
Freeman won her race in 7.94 seconds, the fastest indoor time this year. Cuba’s Anay Tejeda was second (7.96) and Greece’s Flora Rendoumi finished third (8.04).
Katerina Stefanidi of Greece won the pole vault with a leap of 14-4, breaking the world youth indoor record of 14-3 1/4 set in 1998. The 15-year-old Stefanidi also qualified for the European Indoor Championship in Madrid on March 4-6.
Anna Fitidou of Cyprus jumped 14-2 for second, ahead of American Mary Sauer (14-0).
Other winners included Ivan Heshko of Ukraine, who won the 800 in 1:46.49, and Iryna Lishchinska of Ukraine, who won the women’s 1,500 in 4:14.71.
