Argentina beats Uruguay 2-1 for third title
SHAH ALAM, Malaysia (AP) _ Esteban Cambiasso and Diego Quintana scored goals and defending champion Argentina beat Uruguay 2-1 Saturday for its record-tying third World Youth Championship.
Quintana delivered what proved to be the winner with three minutes left in the first half, scoring from 6 yards out after a taking a pass from Lionel Scaloni.
Uruguay scored first, in the 15th minute, when midfielder Pablo Garcia connected on a 25-yard shot from the right of goal which Argentine goalkeeper Leonardo Franco fingered into the top left-hand corner of his own net.
Ten minutes later, Argentina tied the score when Cambiasso, a 16-year-old Real Madrid midfielder, beat Uruguay’s goalkeeper Gustavo Munua.
Argentina defeated Brazil 2-0 to win the 1995 cup and beat the Soviet Union in 1979 for its first under-20 trophy. Brazil also has won the trophy three times.
``Argentina won but I would not say that Argentina had a better team,″ said Uruguayan coach Victor Pua.
The loss was the first in seven tournament games for Uruguay.
Argentina lost only to Australia and beat Hungary, Canada, England, Brazil and Ireland.
Uruguay tied with Morocco and defeated Malaysia, Belgium, United States, France and Ghana.
Earlier Saturday, Ireland defeated Ghana 2-1 for third place.
