WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) _ Anders Bjork scored two goals, including the game-winner midway through the third period, as Denver beat Vermont 6-3 on Friday night in the first round of the NCAA East Regional.

Antti Laaksonen also scored twice and Erik Andersson and James Patterson added goals for the Pioneers (24-12-4), who advanced to a regional quarterfinal game Saturday against second-seeded Boston University.

``We have had success in the past getting possession of the puck deep in the offensive zone because of our size,'' Denver coach George Gwozdecky said. ``We were able to get some penalties and create opportunities.''

Eric Hallman, Stephane Piche and Eric Perrin scored for Vermont (22-11-3).

``They are strong up front and have good size,'' Vermont coach Mike Gilligan said. ``They got off to a good start but we bounced back, then we made some faceoff mistakes in our zone and things got out of hand.''
