OWI suspect injures woman in Ashippun parking lot
ASHIPPUN — A 59-year-old man was arrested for his third offense of drunken driving on Saturday after seriously injuring a pedestrian in a gas station parking lot in Ashippun.
The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash, which occurred at the BP gas station on Highway 67. The woman who was struck suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to a release from the sheriff’s office, which did not identify either party.
According to the release, 911 calls came in around 3:15 p.m. on Saturday reporting the crash. A passenger car was parked in a parking stall and backed into a woman who was standing next to another vehicle, nearly 30 feet behind the car. The car struck the woman, pushed her into the door of the other vehicle, briefly pinning her between the two vehicles. The woman was transported by ground to an area hospital. The striking vehicle was only occupied by its driver and the other vehicle was occupied by the injured woman’s husband, neither of whom were injured.
The sheriff’s office said the alleged drunk driver briefly fled on foot and was acting suspiciously near some garbage cans, but stayed at the gas station. He was arrested for a felony level third offense OWI, causing injury, and was taken into custody and transported to the Dodge County Jail. Charges will be requested to the Dodge County District Attorney’s Office early next week. The incident is still under investigation and other charges may be requested against the driver.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Ashippun First Responders and Fire Department, and Western Lakes EMS.
