OEIRAS, Portugal (AP) _ Sixth-seeded Thomas Muster of Austria beat unseeded Romanian Dinu Pescariu 7-5, 6-1 Tuesday in the first round of the Estoril Open.

Muster, a clay-court specialist ranked 30th in the world, won the Estoril Open in 1995 and 1996.

Morocco's Karim Alami upset seventh-seeded Francisco Clavet of Spain 6-4, 6-3.

Czech Jiri Novak rallied to beat Hicham Arazi of Morocco 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3). Italian Andrea Gaudenzi defeated Spaniard Galo Blanco 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

Czech Slava Dosedel withdrew with a back injury while trailing 6-1, 3-0 to Tomas Nydahl of Sweden.

The top two seeds _ Spaniards Felix Mantilla and Carlos Moya _ play their first-round matches Wednesday.

The Estoril Open, traditional opener of the European clay-court season, is being played at the National Stadium in Oeiras outside Lisbon.
