Memorial for fallen soldiers in Newport for holiday weekend

May 26, 2019

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island nonprofit that helps veterans has set up its memorial to U.S. service members killed in action.

Operation Stand Down Rhode Island placed boots at Fort Adams State Park in Newport for Memorial Day weekend. It’s the first year in Newport. The “Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial” was in Roger Williams Park in Providence over Memorial Day weekend for the past three years.

The nonprofit displays nearly 7,000 boots, one for each service member killed in action since Sept. 11, 2001.

A patriotic concert featuring the 88th Army Band from the Rhode Island National Guard is planned for Sunday night.

Dee DeQuattro, who created the memorial, told WJAR-TV it’s a way to show the cost of freedom and the impact of years of war.
