Cortland Bank opens first Cuyahoga County branch in Strongsville

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio -- A bank established more than 125 years ago in Trumbull County opened its first Cuyahoga County branch Monday (Feb. 4) in Strongsville.

Cortland Bank -- headquartered in the city of Cortland, northeast of Warren -- now occupies a building at 14357 Pearl Road, just south of Ohio 82. The building was vacated last year by Chase Bank, which has built a new Strongsville branch on Pearl south of Shurmer Road.

“We’re looking to expand into communities that have regional and national banks but are missing a community bank (like Cortland),” James Gasior, president and CEO of Cortland Bank, told cleveland.com Monday. “The idea is to bring community banking back into Northeast Ohio.”

Gasior said Cortland’s branch managers know the businesses in their communities and are authorized to make financial decisions. That means faster turnaround on business loan applications.

Mayor Thomas Perciak was the catalyst in bringing Cortland to Strongsville. Perciak is vice chairman of Cortland’s Board of Directors, so he knew Chase Bank was moving and that a building would become available on Pearl.

Before he became mayor, Perciak was president and CEO of Strongsville Savings Bank, which in 1999 was merged into Fifth Third Bank.

Cortland Bank, which today has 15 offices, was established in 1892. It has expanded over the years from Trumbull County into Summit, Mahoning, Portage and Ashtabula counties.

Gasior said Cortland’s growth has accelerated over the past 10 years or so. The Strongsville branch is the bank’s third new location within the past four years.

“We saw limited opportunities in staying within the footprint we were in,” Gasior said. “We wanted to continue to grow the bank by expanding into new markets.”

For 2018, Cortland reported record earnings of $8.8 million, more than twice the 2017 amount.

Cortland is planning a March 25 grand opening at Bucci’s J-Bella Restaurant on Pearl Road in Strongsville.
