French come under fire in C. African Republic

December 9, 2013

BANGUI, Central African Republic (AP) — French forces in troubled Central African Republic say they came under attack in a neighborhood of the capital but that the area has now been secured.

The soldiers, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to journalists, said they encountered unknown fighters in an area near the airport.

French forces are stepping up their presence on the streets of Bangui. France has long had several hundred soldiers in its former colony but now has more than 1,000.

The long chaotic country tumbled into further troubles last week when Christian armed fighters who oppose the Muslim ex-rebels now in charge of Central African Republic launched an assault on the capital. In the bloodshed that followed, more than 400 people were killed.
