Italian PM pledges to ensure Expo opener at La Scala goes on
MILAN (AP) — Italian Premier Matteo Renzi says he will intervene, if necessary, to ensure that a May 1 Expo 2015 opening performance at La Scala goes ahead despite a union’s call for members not to work on the traditional labor day holiday.
Riccardo Chailly is slated to conduct “Turandot” at the world-renowned opera house as part of events launching the world fair, running from May 1-Oct. 31.
Renzi told an Expo event Saturday that he is prepared to take measures to ensure that Italy’s image isn’t damaged by what he called a “minority” of workers. He noted that they were not exercising “the sacrosanct right to strike” but had called an “unacceptable” boycott.
La Scala’s management hopes to have a resolution before tickets are scheduled to go on sale later this month.
