Maine CDC: Influenza cases are accelerating across state
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Health officials say the number of influenza cases this season has topped 1,700 in Maine.
The Maine Center for Disease Control reports that 531 cases were reported in the week ending Jan. 20, showing the outbreak is growing fast.
Officials said that there were 18 new outbreaks, including 15 in long-term care facilities, two in acute care facilities and one in a school.
The Maine CDC reports that of 1,749 cases there have been 429 hospitalizations so far. The total number of deaths now stands at 22, all adults.
The vast majority of influenza cases are the more virulent H3N2 version. Confirmed flu cases were most prevalent in York and Penobscot counties.
