Brownsville attorneys help Friendship of Women during day of service
With a little paint and a lot of enthusiasm, staff from a Brownsville law firm spent the day brightening the children advocate’s office at the Friendship of Women community center. The volunteers were part of the inaugural Global Day of Service led by attorneys at Ford Motor Company.
Alison Kennamer is a partner at Colvin, Saenz, Rodriguez & Kennamer and said the firm was invited by the Legal Alliance for Women at Ford, one of its clients, to take part in the service project for organizations that are empowering women and girls. Friendship of Women provides services to and advocacy on behalf of adults and children impacted by violence.
“ (The children’s area) really needed to be revamped,” Evonne Lopez, Friendship of Women education and volunteer coordinator, said. “Considering it’s a small, enclosed area, it’s a great way to make it interactive.”
She said children and adolescents will be able to use the room while their parents are in Friendship of Women classes, which range from English as a second language to support groups and survivors’ crafting.
Law firm staffers had already painted the formerly blank walls of the office to include a bright blue sky, grass and a road on which Kennamer said children will be able to stick and unstick colorful cutouts of cars. One wall was painted with chalkboard paint, she added, and the team also planned to add color to the adjoining bathroom.
“ We learned we had some people with some real artistic vision. We’re really doing something that’s completely different” compared to the original decorations, she said.
Lopez said the brighter, more colorful room will be a “really big surprise” for the children who play games and read in the room.
The cheeriness will “kind of give them that inspiration that everything’s going to be OK,” she said, adding that she’s grateful the community “gives back their time and effort and creativity to these survivors.”
Lopez said community groups are always welcome to contact Friendship of Women with ideas for service projects. Learn more about the organization at www.fowinc.com or by calling (956) 544-7412.
