Gov. Kay Orr Concedes Governor’s Race to Nelson
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ Republican Gov. Kay Orr on Friday conceded the governor’s race to Democrat Ben Nelson, pledging she would work with him.
″The counting of the absentee and disabled ballots has not significantly changed the balance of total votes in the gubernatorial election. Therefore, I am officially conceding the election to Mr. Nelson,″ Mrs. Orr said in a statement.
Mrs. Orr was out of the state on a previously planned vacation and was not expected to return until Thursday, said Cindy Evert, a spokeswoman for the governor.
Nelson defeated Mrs. Orr, the nation’s first Republican woman elected governor, in Tuesday’s election by 4,658 votes in unofficial returns, not including absentee ballots.
County officials continued to work Friday on counting absentee ballots and canvassing the tallies to certify the vote. But the absentee vote count appeared to follow election night patterns.
