County residents vote to create emergency district
Property owners in two areas just outside of Pearland have approved, the creation of emergency services districts to fund their own fire and medical response services through local property tax revenue
Emergency Services District No. 4 passed with 68 percent in favor. The district is along the southern edge of Pearland.
Emergency Service District No. 5 in the Silverlake area between Texas 288 and Cullen Boulevard, passed with nearly 80 percent in favor.
Brazoria County Commissioners Court will appoint governing boards. The districts then could levy property taxes of up to 10 cents per $100 valuation to pay for emergency medical service and fire facilities, equipment and personnel or to cover the cost to contract those services.
The city of Pearland had decided to stop providing emergency services to both the areas after residents in various parts of its city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction fought an annexation effort and ultimately won the right to remain unincorporated in March.
