Volunteers Are Needed for Leominster Observances

May 22, 2019

LEOMINSTER — The city’s Veterans’ Services Office is seeking volunteers for setting up flags at the city’s cemeteries ahead of Memorial Day services.

This year, said Veterans’ Service Officer Richard Voutour, more than 5,000 flags will be placed in Leominster’s cemeteries by volunteers, but more volunteers are needed on Saturday at Evergreen, St. Leo’s, and St. Cecilia’s cemeteries.

Leominster’s Girl and Boy Scouts and other local Veterans’ organizations have been volunteering for decades and will help again this year, he said.

If interested in volunteering, please show up at the cemetery of your choice at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, May 25. The office will have a person at each location with maps and flags and is recommending bringing bring gloves and a small garden trowel to clean the grass covered stones.

The goal is for volunteers to place a flag on every veteran’s grave. In the event a flag is not on your loved one’s marker, please contact the office to get a flag and to ensure your loved one is on our list of veterans.
