Nicholls State 10, Samford 3
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) _ Nicholls St. receiver Kajuan Billings caught an 87-yard touchdown pass from Braz Zeller with six seconds left in the third quarter that made the difference in a 10-3 victory over Samford on Saturday.
Zeller was 10-of-21 passing, with two interceptions, for 136 yards.
Samford (3-2) got on the board in the final minutes of the first half on Mike Howell’s 27-yard field goal.
Nicholls (2-2) completed the scoring on a 23-yard Adam Diel field goal with 4:49 left in the game. The drive was set up by an interception by Reggie Davis that put the Colonels at the Bulldogs’ 31.
Samford got the ball one last time with 2:23 left in the game at their own 16. They drove to the Nicholls 42, but a ``Hail Mary″ pass fell incomplete on the last play of the game.
Nicholls recorded 137 yards rushing, led by Frank Wilson with 66 yards, to the Bulldogs’ 69.
Samford starting quarterback Bart Yancey came into the game needing only 56 yards to become the school’s total offense leader, but was held to 28 yards.
