Less than two months after leaving Boise heartbroken after failing to rally past Boise State in a 21-16 loss, the Cougars are heading back to the blue turf.

After the College Football Playoff teams and the big bowl games were announced, BYU found out its postseason destination and opponent Sunday afternoon when the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl announced that the Cougars will face Western Michigan on Dec. 21.

The bowl posted on its @IDPotatoBowl Twitter account:

“The 2018 #Potatobowl will feature @WMU_Football and @BYUfootball Congratulations to both teams!”

According to the bowl website, www.famousidahopotatobowl.com, the game will be played at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 21, at Albertsons Stadium in Boise.

The official BYU football Twitter account, @BYUfootball, focused on the fact that the Cougars are back in a bowl game after having a losing season in 2017, saying:

The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl has been played under different names since 1997, most recently featuring tie-ins to the MAC and the Mountain West Conference.

In the most recent bowl matchup in 2017, Wyoming defeated Central Michigan, 37-14.

According to the website, “the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl is the longest-running cold weather bowl game in college football.
