Alle-Kiski Valley Campus Clippings: Chapla gets weekly PSAC award

Jake Chapla had a special week for Slippery Rock.

The junior kicker/punter, a Plum graduate, was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West’s Special Teams Athlete of the Week on Monday after a big performance in The Rock’s 30-27 win over No. 14 IUP.

Chapla kicked a career-high three field goals, from 33, 41 and 46 yards, and went 3-for-3 on extra points in the victory. He also added a 75-yard punt, 3 yards short of the Slippery Rock record.

The PSAC leader with eight field goals, Chapla has been named Special Teams Player of the Week three times this season.

Buffalo: Senior Adam Mitcheson (Kiski Area) kicked field goals of 26 and 27 yards and four extra points as the Bulls beat Central Michigan, 34-24.

Cal (Pa.): Redshirt sophomore Tyson Hill led the Vulcans with 78 receiving yards on eight catches in a 41-27 win at Clarion.

IUP: Sophomore Justice Evans (Vandergrift/Central Catholic) caught touchdown passes of 47 and 59 yards in the Crimson Hawks’ 30-27 loss to Slippery Rock. Evans finished with 117 yards receiving on three catches and added a team-high 39 rushing yards.

Pitt: Redshirt senior Quintin Wirginis (Fox Chapel) made one of the biggest plays of the game on defense in the Panthers’ 44-37 overtime win over Syracuse, forcing a fumble that Dane Jackson returned for a touchdown in the first quarter. Wirginis finished with eight tackles and a sack.

Washington and Jefferson: Senior Cody Milsom (Knoch) had a team-high 13 tackles, 1 tackle for loss and a half-sack in a 44-36 win over Case Western Reserve. Sophomore Max Garda (Burrell) had two tackles and a pass breakup.

Women’s soccer

Marshall: Junior Megan Bonelli (Apollo-Ridge) was named Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week last week after recording 13 saves in a win over Old Dominion and loss to Charlotte. Bonelli moved into fourth place in school history in saves -- she has 177 in her career. For the season, she has 58 saves and a .753 save percentage.

Men’s soccer

Washington and Jefferson: Freshman Mike Komaniak (Riverview) scored the tying goal in the 78th minute, but the Presidents fell 2-1 in overtime to Grove City.

Women’s tennis

Slippery Rock: Junior Lacey Cohen (Fox Chapel) won in singles and doubles as Slippery Rock closed out its fall season with a 7-0 win over Millersville. Cohen, who won the PSAC singles title, finished the fall with a combined 8-4 record between singles and doubles.

Women’s volleyball

Thiel: Freshman Courtney Grubbs (Freeport) was named Presidents’ Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday, the second time she received the recognition this season. Grubbs, a setter, had 100 assists in three matches to help the Tomcats to a 2-1 record with victories over SUNY Canton and Pitt-Bradford. She registered 40 assists in the 3-2 win over Pitt-Bradford.
