Cleveland routs River Valley 12-3
BULLHEAD CITY — Cleveland Storm, Rio Rancho, New Mexico, behind the right arm of Aalijah Alarcon and some power hitting, overpowered the Lady Dust Devils 12-3 during the first day of the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions on Thursday evening.
Jaycee Gandert hit a grand slam in the top of the first inning and that was enough for the Storm, as Alarcon, who came in relief in the bottom of the first with no out, hurled six innings to earn the victory.
Alarcon gave up one run on three hits, while striking out 10 and walking none during the six-inning, time-shortened softball game.
“Our girls came out a little bit flat,” Dust Devils head coach Kathleen Watson said about her 2-1 squad.
Dust Devils senior Kortney Fletcher’s fourth-inning solo homer was the only run Alarcon allowed.
River Valley scored two runs in the bottom of the first, which cut its deficit to 4-2 when senior third baseman Ryann Glenn doubled, senior shortstop Tianna Williams doubled her home and then senior outfielder Draper doubled home Williams.
“We had three doubles in a row in the first inning,” Watson said. “And after that, we kind of started to settle down a little bit.”
The Storm added four runs in the top of the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth innings.
“Defensively, we had a freshman rob a home run over the fence,” said Watson about Rusti Glenn’s grab.
