Warm weather, animals and ice cream to make a fun day at the zoo

September 1, 2018

SCOTTSBLUFF - Staff at Riverside Discovery Center are planning something fun for Labor Day.

The Labor Day Splash Pad Bash at the zoo is promising a fun time for young and old. Zoo Director Anthony Mason has planned a fun day of activities that everyone can participate in. There will be games set up for kids to play, animal ambassadors will be walking around for kids to touch and learn about and music will be blasting from around the Splash Pad so visitors can have a chance to cool down during their time at the zoo.

“School’s back in session, but the Splash is still on, so let’s have a fun party,” said Alex Henwood, education curator. “We have activities and animals to see and interact with as well as the petting zoo.”

In addition to these activities, a scavenger hunt with prizes is another activity that is fun and educational.

Since the weather is still warm, there will also be ice cream for sale at $1 per scoop for visitors who’d like to cool down without getting wet at the Splash Pad. Although there have been a few cool days in August, the temperature is expected to be in the 80s during the Splash Pad Bash.

The Rowdy Reptile show will also provide visitors a chance to learn from zookeepers as they bring their lizard, snake, turtle and tortoise friends to the zoo stage to teach visitors about reptile habitats, each reptile’s distinctive features and conservation.

The Splash Pad will continue to operate after Labor Day.

“We want people to continue to have a fun time at the Splash Pad,” Mason said. “It will be on as long as weather permits.”

The Splash Pad Bash runs on Monday, Sept. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the Rowdy Reptile Show runs at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. For more information, contact the zoo at 308-630-6236.
