February 23, 2019

LINCOLN -- Freeman was able to cruise through the C2-1 Subdistrict in Beatrice and will now play in a district final game on Monday.

After a lopsided win over Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer on Tuesday, the Falcons defeated Southern Thursday night 68-33 in the subdistrict final. Freeman will be the No. 4 seed in C2 and will play 13th-seeded Howells-Dodge. That game will be played at 7 p.m. Monday night at Malcolm High School.

With a win against Howells-Dodge, Freeman will advance to the Class C2 State Tournament.

Freeman wasted little time jumping on top of Southern Thursday night. They opened the game with a 14-0 run. Gabe Eisenbarth started the run with a three pointer and Brady Ideus followed that up with a basket in the post.

Trey Yates’ three pointer made it 8-0 and a three point play by Idues made it 11-0. A free throw by Logan Anderson and another basket by Yates finished the 14-0 run.

Southern got three pointers from Riley Wegner, Nicholas Lyons and Carson Borzekofski at the end of the first quarter, cutting their deficit to 16-9 after one.

Freeman scored the first six points of the second quarter. Ideus got it started with a basket followed by a basket by Tyler Adams in the post and a fast break lay up by Anderson, making it 22-9.

Freeman scored 12 of the next 15 points, including two three pointers by Eisenbarth, extending their lead to 34-12. They led 36-18 at half time.

The Falcons then extended their lead to 45-24 after three quarters, allowing them to coast to the 68-33 win.

Ideus and Yates had 15 points each for Freeman while Eisenbarth had 11, Anderson had 10, Adams had six, Eli Pelc had five, Holden Ruse had four and Lucas Archer had two.

Southern’s Braden Klover had 10 points while Nicholas Lyons had eight, Drake Adams had four, Borzekofski and Wegner had three each and Brock Adams and Jacob VanWinkle had one each.

Southern’s season comes to an end after posting a 13-11 record.

Tri County falls, but still advances to district final

Tri County lost their subdistrict final game to Sutton 63-59 Thursday night, but will still advance to a district final game due to their standing in the power point rankings.

The Trojans are the No. 10 seed in Class C2 and they will play seventh-seeded Yutan. That game is slated for 7 p.m. Monday night at Norris High School. The winner of that will advance to Class C2 State.

Tri County led Sutton 15-11 after one quarter, but Sutton took a 31-21 lead into the locker room at half time. The Trojans trailed 47-39 after three quarters. They outscored Sutton 20-16 in the last quarter, but it wasn’t enough to get the win.
