Owner of King Gyros on Goshen dies at 64
King Gyros on Goshen Avenue will close Friday afternoon for the funeral of co-owner Steve Sakellariou.
Sakellariou, 64, died Monday of complications from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, his family said on the restaurant’s Facebook page.
He owned the restaurant at 814 Goshen Ave. with his wife of 30 years, Leia Sakellariou. It opened in a former Penguin Point in 1991.
Condolences soon followed the social media post, with comments nearing 300 by midafternoon Wednesday.
“This got away from us,” his wife said. But the outpouring didn’t seem to surprise her.
“He was lovable,” said Leia Sakellariou, adding her husband liked to joke with customers. “He made everybody feel welcome.”
The couple had a son and daughter, 29 and 28.
Funeral services are being provided by Advantage Funeral and Cremation Services of Fort Wayne.
The King Gyros will be closed from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. for the private funeral.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a favorite charity in the name of Steve from King Gyros.
