Human remains found in Atascosa being investigated as homicide
Skeletal remains were discovered in a bag Wednesday afternoon in Atascosa County.
Atascosa Sheriff David Soward said land surveyors found a suspicious bag at about 1 p.m. on an estate off of East Gates Valley Road near Highway 16.
The surveyors called 911, and when deputies arrived they confirmed that a human skeleton was inside, Soward said.
“We’re treating it as a homicide based on the way the remains were found,” the sheriff said.
The bag was found above ground, and some of the bones had been scattered by animals, authorities said.
Investigators estimate that the remains have been there for a year.
The sheriff said the bones will be taken to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office to start the identification process.
“We don’t know whether the remains are that of a male, female, their age or how they died,” Soward said.
