Mustangs host playoff tomorrow

NEEDLES — Mustangs varsity football hosts the Battle Mountain Longhorns, the No. 2 seed from the NIAA 2A North League, in state championship football playoff action Saturday, Nov. 10.

Kickoff is at 1 p.m. on Branigan Field. Playoffs are not Needles High School games; they are held by the NIAA which sets prices and receives the money. Only NIAA passes will be accepted. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students, $3 for seniors 62 and better, children eight and under get in free with a paying adult.

The Mustangs defeated the Lincoln County Lynx 36-28 on Oct. 25 to win the NIAA 2A South League Championship and earn a home-field playoff appearance. In the north league, Battle Mountain defeated the Yerington Lions 27-8 to enter the state semi-final at Needles. Pershing County’s Mustangs defeated the North Tahoe Lakers 43-0 to host a Nov. 10 playoff with Lincoln County.

The two winners of the Nov. 10 playoffs meet for the state championship game at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at a south league high school to be determined. State championship games are usually held in Las Vegas or Reno, Nev.

Needles hosted Battle Mountain in last year’s playoffs, which went into overtime with the score knotted at 30. The Longhorns took the win in a sudden-death overtime format where each team takes a turn from the 10-yard line until one or the other scores.
