LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) _ Julie Haydon, a stage and movie actress who played the shy Laura Wingfield in the original Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' ''The Glass Menagerie,'' has died of cancer at age 84.

Haydon died Saturday in a nursing home, said Patricia Angelin, executor of the estate of Haydon's late husband, drama critic George Nathan.

She starred in the 1945 Broadway production of ''The Glass Menagerie,'' the work that established Williams' reputation. In 1939, she was Kitty Duval in William Saroyan's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, ''The Time of Your Life.''

Her movie credits included ''The Scoundrel,'' in which she starred with Noel Coward, and ''A Family Affair,'' in which she played played Mickey Rooney's older sister. ''A Family Affair'' was the first of the Andy Hardy movies.

She married Nathan in 1955 and he died in 1958. They had no children.

She left New York in 1962 and worked for about 10 years as an actress in residence at the College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minn., before moving to La Crosse, Wis.

''She was always very shy, dreadfully shy,'' despite the type of career she chose, said Rick Przywojski, a La Crosse optician and friend.

She is survived by her sister, Miriam Donaldson Ziegler of Los Angeles.
