Former Avon Lake fire chief arrested for rape, sexual battery

ELYRIA, Ohio -- A former Avon Lake fire chief has been arrested and charged with rape and sexual battery, according to Elyria police.

Lawrence Grizzell, 59, was arrested Monday afternoon at his Elyria home. He was fire chief of the Avon Lake Fire Department from 2001 to 2005, and stayed with the department until he retired in 2015.

Elyria police received a complaint Sunday alleging that Grizzell had committed a sexual offense against someone known to him.

Officers arrested him about 4:15 p.m. Monday. During his interview with detectives, Grizzell made admissions regarding the alleged offenses.

Grizzell faces a first-degree felony charge of rape and a third-degree felony charge of sexual battery. He is being held without bond in the Lorain County Jail and awaits a hearing in Elyria Municipal Court.
