Mets’ Alfonso Hits Three Homers
HOUSTON (AP) _ Edgardo Alfonzo hit three homers for the New York Mets on Monday night against the Houston Astros.
Alfonzo became the sixth Mets player to accomplish the feat _ all on the road _ with a solo homer off Shane Reynolds in the first, a two-run shot off Brian Williams in the fourth and a leadoff homer in the sixth off Sean Bergman.
The second baseman also singled and scored a run in the second.
Alfonzo’s 23 home runs are a Mets record for a second baseman in a season, surpassing Jeff Kent who hit 21 in 1993.
Gary Carter was the last Mets player to homer three times in a game when he did it at San Diego on Sept. 3, 1985.
