Dave Eaton: Thankful for mayor’s service

I’d like to take a moment to express my thanks to “His Honor,” outgoing Mayor Mark Nexsen. Mayor Nexsen took the reins of the City twelve years ago and has served this City very well as the Mayor.

As the Commander of VFW Post 9401 in 2010-11, I got to know Mayor Nexsen personally. During that period, the country was fully-engaged in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our service people were coming home from these conflicts on a regular basis, returning to Lake Havasu City. Both VFW #9401 and American Legion #81 would hold “Welcome Home” ceremonies for these returning Vets at the two Posts. Mayor Nexsen and the City Council members were invited to attend these ceremonies, and Mayor Nexsen was always in attendance with his “Key to the City” for every service person who returned.

The returning service persons and their families, always appreciated his attendance and his short address during the ceremony. Mayor Nexsen always attended the Veterans Day Parade and Memorial Day ceremonies at Wheeler Park and the Cemetery. Mayor Nexsen was always fully-engaged with the Veteran community in the city.

During his administration Mayor Nexsen shepherded the city-wide sewer project through to completion. He was widely-criticized throughout the project for how much it was costing and construction disruptions to the citizenry. I had a few choice words for him as the “The Sewer Monster” passed through my neighborhood. However, Mayor Nexsen never blinked, knowing that a City of 60,000 residents could not continue on, or grow with a “Septic” waste water disposal system. The system was completed, is fully-operational, and is being paid for in a fiscally responsible way. For these and many other accomplishments, I thank the Mayor for his service to our community and its citizens. Mark, best wishes for your retirement.
