WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) _ Ron Perry, who has been the athletic director at Holy Cross since 1972, will retire at the end of the school year and work as an assistant to the president.

``My work at Holy Cross truly has been a labor of love,'' said Perry, who graduated from the school in 1954. ``I will miss HC but hope to do other things that I don't currently have time for.''

Perry, 65, was a pitcher on the Crusaders baseball team that won the College World Series in 1952 and captained the basketball team that won the NIT title. Over the last five years, he has helped the school in its transition from scholarship athletics to need-based financial aid.

``He has accomplished a tremendous amount for Holy Cross athletics,'' the Rev. Gerald Reedy, the university's president, said. ``But his greatest legacy is in his attention to the individual student athletes.''
