North Carolina 96, Howard 49
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) _ Marion Jones scored 30 points and Tracy Reid added 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the 20th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels past Howard 96-49 Saturday.
Chanel Wright chipped in with 14 points and Yanick Clay 10 for North Carolina (5-0), helping the Tar Heels maintain their status as the NCAA women’s top scorers (93.6 points a game).
Bison guard Amanda Hayes got 9 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to lead Howard (1-5). Senior 6-5 center Denique Graves was held to 8 points and 1 rebound, well below her team-leading averages of 14 points and 11 rebounds coming into Saturday.
Every Tar Heel who dressed for the game played, and all but one scored at last one basket.
Jones scored 19 points in the first half, pacing North Carolina to a 46-27 lead at the break. North Carolina pulled away steadily throughout the second half and led by as much as 96-46 in the final minute.
Jones scored six more points in the opening 3:15 of the second half to balloon the margin to 54-31. Her last baskets, back-to-back layups, pushed North Carolina’s lead to 68-32 with 8:36 remaining and got her within 2 points of her career scoring high.
Jones made 10 of 15 shots from the field and 10 of 14 at the line.
North Carolina shot 32 for 75 from the floor. The Tar Heels’ 15-for-43 performance in the first half helped Howard stay as close as 28-21 with 6 minutes left before halftime.
Howard hit just 17 of 58 shots from the floor, but managed a 50-50 tie with the Tar Heels on the boards.
North Carolina’s vastly superior speed produced 33 Howard turnovers.
