Braves Place Hampton on 15-Day DL
ATLANTA (AP) _ Pitcher Mike Hampton was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday by the Atlanta Braves because of a strained right calf.
The Braves gave no indication what caused the injury or the severity. A day earlier, Atlanta put Paul Byrd on the disabled list Friday with a sore right elbow.
Horacio Ramirez, who stood a slim chance of earning a spot in the starting rotation at the beginning of spring training, becomes the No. 3 starter and faces Montreal on Wednesday. He originally was to start Saturday’s exhibition game at Turner Field against Boston but was replaced by Jason Marquis.
Hampton was traded to Atlanta during the winter as part of a three-team deal. He pitched poorly in the thin air of Denver with the Colorado Rockies during the last two seasons, going 7-15 with a 6.15 ERA last year.
He pitched well in his last spring training outing, giving up one unearned run Thursday against Houston. Hampton struggled early in spring training but didn’t allow an earned run in his final two starts.
Hampton was put on the DL retroactive to Friday and is eligible to be activated April 12.
