Man seriously injured after homemade bomb explodes in north Spokane County

October 9, 2018

A man was seriously injured Monday evening in an explosion near Milan while attempting to make a bomb, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The 59-year-old man was airlifted to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries after the explosion erupted at about 6:15 p.m. at a remote residence in the 35800 block of N. Waldrons Lane off U.S. Highway 2, wrote deputy Mark Gregory in a news release.

Witnesses told deputies the man was attempting to make the explosive device, either for protection or due to mental health issues, when it unexpectedly detonated. The man, whose name was not released, was reportedly not taking his medication and appeared paranoid.

Gregory said the man suffered “severe, life-threatening injuries.” He was listed in critical condition Tuesday morning.

Nobody else was injured in the explosion. Deputies and bomb technicians are continuing to investigate.
