Galaxy Shuts Out Earthquakes, 3-0
CARSON, Calif. (AP) _ Alejandro Moreno scored twice in the first half for the first multiple-goal game of his career and assisted on Simon Elliott’s second-half goal as the Los Angeles Galaxy defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 3-0 Saturday night.
Goalkeeper Kevin Hartman made four saves before being replaced by Dan Popik in the 74th minute for Los Angeles (9-12-8).
San Jose (14-7-8) had to play the final 47 minutes short-handed after defender Craig Waibel received a red card for tackling Moreno after Moreno had passed the passed the ball. Under league rules, Waibel will be suspended for the next game, next Saturday against Los Angeles at San Jose.
Moreno opened the scoring in the sixth minute, heading in a cross from Mauricio Cienfuegos.
Moreno scored again in the 35th minute, taking Carlos Ruiz’s cross from the left side and firing a shot from about eight yards out past Pat Onstad for his fifth goal of the season.
Elliott scored his first goal of the season in the 61st minute, with a long pass from Ruiz creating a one-on-one situation against Onstad. Onstad raced off his line to challenge Elliot, who took a shot from about 22 yards out that deflected off the goalie into the net.
Popik did not need to make a save to complete the shutout in his MLS debut. Onstad had six saves.
The game was the first of four consecutive between the two teams, who are assured of meeting in the first round of the playoffs.
