Wife of Gov. Running for Congress
TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ The wife of Gov. Frank Keating is running for Congress, saying her experience as Oklahoma first lady, a former business owner, volunteer, wife and mother qualified her for the job.
In announcing her run Saturday, Cathy Keating pledged to mix bedrock Republican ideals with a personal desire to help others.
``Make no mistake _ I am a proud Republican and a compassionate, but committed, conservative,″ she said.
With her husband beaming and silent at her side, Keating told reporters that she favored a substantial tax cut, strong defense, less government and traditional family values. She also said she is anti-abortion and, as a ``hunter and fisherwoman,″ supports the Second Amendment.
She wants to succeed fellow Republican, Rep. Steve Largent. Largent, whose seat is up for re-election in November 2002, is considering resigning early to focus on a gubernatorial bid. He hasn’t declared his candidacy for governor but is planning a campaign.
Term limits prevent the governor from running again.
