Thousands Watch Yemen Execution
SAN`A, Yemen (AP) _ More than 3,000 people turned out to watch the execution of a Yemeni man convicted of murdering a pediatrician in front of his children, a police official said Thursday.
Faisal Saleh bin Zabe was convicted of shooting to death Dr. Mohammed Hayel al-Areeqi earlier this month. Zabe was executed Wednesday by firing squad in the northern city of Marib, where the murder took place.
On Oct. 5, al-Areeqi, who was about to drop off his two daughters and son at school, stopped to give Zabe a lift. Zabe then killed the doctor, threw his body out of the car and forced his children out before speeding away, the police official said on customary condition of anonymity.
Yemen imposes the death penalty for rape and murder. Most executions are carried out in public to set an example.
