Jury finds doctor guilty of drug trafficking, Medicaid fraud

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio doctor accused of prescribing opioids and other drugs without a legitimate purpose has been found guilty of more than 100 charges including involuntary manslaughter, aggravated drug trafficking and Medicaid fraud.

The Canton Repository reports a Stark County jury this week also found 41-year-old Frank Lazzerini guilty of tampering with records and engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity for using his medical office to run a criminal enterprise.

Authorities say the involuntary manslaughter charge was for prescribing drugs that killed a Canton woman in 2014.

Law enforcement agencies raided Lazzerini’s Premier Family Practice in Jackson Township in February 2016. The Barberton man then surrendered his medical license, filed for bankruptcy and was arrested in 2018.

Defense attorney Brian Pierce says Lazzerini helped patients and an appeal is planned.
