Gaviria Names New Cabinet
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) _ Colombian President Cesar Gaviria has named a Cabinet that includes a woman foreign minister and a member of a former guerilla group, reflecting the new political landscape following elections last month.
Nohemi Sanin, 42, until now Colombia’s ambassador to Venezuela, is the first woman to be named foreign minister in Colombia’s history.
Other new ministers named Friday include Jorge Ospina, development; Mauricio Vargas, communications; Juan Camilo Retsrepo, energy; Juan Manuel Santos, international trade; Carlos Holmes, education; and Afonso Lopez, agriculture.
Camilo Gonzalez, a member of a former leftist rebel group called the M-19, retained his post as health minister. Rudolf Hommes continues in his post as finance minister.
The new Cabinet includes five members of opposition parties that won seats in congressional elections two weeks ago.
