European Stocks Mostly Lower

LONDON (AP) _ European shares were mostly lower Friday, with some gains in individual stocks.

The Dow Jones Stoxx Index of 592 European companies closed down 0.41 points, or 0.1 percent, at 353.54, while the Dow Jones Euro Stoxx Index, which tracks 297 companies in countries which joined the single currency, ended 2.57 points lower at 377.09.

The Dow Jones Euro Stoxx 50 Index finished off 40.71 points at 4,458.04, while the DJ Stoxx 50 Index ended 30.81 points weaker at 4,409.82.

In domestic markets, Frankfurt’s Xetra DAX index closed 0.3 percent at 6,097.90. The Paris CAC 40 index ended down 1.2 percent to 5,481.10, Amsterdam’s AEX rose 0.2 percent to 619.35 and Zurich’s SMI fell 0.6 percent to 7,299.70.

London’s Financial Times-Stock Exchange 100-Share Index rose 0.9 percent to 6,739.50 in heavy trading. Gains primarily were focused on select stocks.

In the pharmaceutical sector, Swiss drugs company Novartis fell while drug maker Roche rose. Both Glaxo Wellcome and AstraZeneca were down.

The pharmaceutical Dow Jones Stoxx subindex ended 1.3 percent lower, bringing the drop for the month so far to 5.2 percent.

The Stoxx technology sector subindex was virtually flat, although selected stocks _ including British computers group Logica _ continued to rise.

The telecommunications subindex fell 1.2 percent. There was a 1.4 percent rise in banking stocks and a 1.5 percent gain in media.

France Telecom fell after it failed to take control of German wireless operator E-Plus.
