Cal Poly-SLO 87, Loyola Marymount 70
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) _ Shanta Cotright, Ross Ketcham and Damien Levesque scored 14 points each Tuesday night, leading Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo to an 87-70 victory over Loyola Marymount.
Levesque also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Mustangs, who made the biggest turnaround of any Division I school last year when they finished 16-13 after going 1-26 in 1994-95.
Reserve Mike Wozniak scored 12 points for the winners in just 17 minutes.
It was the first win in for Cal Poly (2-0) in four meetings against the Lions. Loyola was coached by assistant Robert Burke. Head coach Bob Olive was in Pennsylvania with his mother, who is ill.
Ben Ammerman led Loyola (1-1) with 21 points. Tim Kennedy added a career-high 16 points and John Anthony had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Lions.
Cal Poly went on a 22-6 run to turn a 20-19 deficit into a 41-26 lead and stayed on top the rest of the way. It was 41-30 at halftime.
The Lions outscored the Mustangs 13-4 to cut Cal Poly’s lead to 71-64 with a little over four minutes left, but that was as close as Loyola would get.
Cal Poly made 32 of its 72 field goal attempts (44.4 percent) to 23-of-59 for Loyola (39.0 percent).
