Air France Strike Grounds Flights

November 18, 1998

PARIS (AP) _ Air France flights were severely disrupted Wednesday as a strike by flight attendants entered its second and final day.

Air France said it would guarantee 55 percent of long-haul flights and 60 percent of short and medium-distance flights, the same as Tuesday.

The flight attendants are demanding that the company scrap a two-tier salary scheme under which staff hired since December 1995 earn less than their counterparts.

The strike was called by six unions.

A 10-day pilots strike in early June cost Air France 1 billion francs, or $166 million, before the main pilots union accepted an offer of stock in exchange for salary freezes.
