SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- The Beatrice softball team picked up two wins on Saturday to claim the River Cities Conference Championship.

Beatrice defeated Omaha Skutt 5-3 in the championship game. It was the third meeting between the two Class B powerhouses with each team picking up a win prior to Saturday’s rubber match.

The Lady O jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against Skutt.

Singles by Olivia Aden, Whitney Schwisow, Ashton Sandman and Hannah Lytle led to the two runs in the first inning.

Addie Barnard added to that lead in the top of the third inning with a lead off solo home run, making it 3-0.

In that same inning, with two outs, Reganne Henning singled and went to third on Tavia Hausman’s single. She then scored on Reagan Delabar’s RBI single to make it 4-0.

Two walks, a double and an error led to two runs for Skutt in the bottom of the third inning to make it 4-2.

Neither team would score again until the bottom of the sixth inning when Skutt used three singles and a walk to score one more run, making it 4-3. The inning ended, though, when the Skyhawks tried to score the tying run on that same play, but she was thrown out.

Hausman gave the Lady O an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run.

Skutt had runners at first and second with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but a strikeout and a ground out ended the game.

Barnard pitched all seven innings for Beatrice, giving up three runs (two earned) on nine hits while striking out five and walking four.

Offensively, Beatrice had 13 hits in the game. Both Hausman and Barnard had singles to go with their home runs. Schwisow had three singles while Aden, Sandman, Lytle, Henning, Delabar and Carley Leners had a single each.

Beatrice reached the championship game by beating Duchesne/Roncalli 14-6 earlier in the day. Barnard pitched three innings and got the win. She gave up one unearned run on two hits while striking out four and walking two. Rylee Pangborn and Bailey Green also pitched in the game.
