Latest Kevorkian patient dies the day of Good’s funeral

August 30, 1997

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. (AP) _ A Colorado man who was counseled by Dr. Jack Kevorkian’s closest ally committed suicide with Kevorkian’s help on the same day as her funeral, Kevorkian’s lawyer said.

Attorney Geoffrey Fieger said Saturday that Kevorkian was with Thomas Edward Summerlee of Colorado Springs, Colo., when he died Friday.

Summerlee chose to die on Aug. 29 because it was his birthday, said Fieger, who wasn’t sure whether Summerlee had turned 55 or 56.

It is only the second death Kevorkian has acknowledged attending since the state issued a cease-and-desist order against him in April for practicing medicine without a license.

Summerlee’s death brings the number of deaths Kevorkian has acknowledged attending to 47, although Fieger said after the death of a New York woman this month that Kevorkian had attended ``nearly 100″ deaths.

Police Chief Bill Dwyer said Summerlee was found dead Friday evening in a room at a Motel 6.

Summerlee’s body was found lying on a bed in the motel room, Dwyer said. A typed note on a table said Summerlee had multiple sclerosis. The note also left Fieger’s telephone number.

``This death is being treated by this department as a suspicious death. We’re conducting it as it would be conducted in any homicide,″ Dwyer said.

The Oakland County medical examiner’s office said Summerlee’s autopsy was complete Saturday but no cause of death had been determined.

Farmington Hills is the same Detroit suburb where Janet Good’s funeral was held Friday morning. The 73-year-old woman died Tuesday after a two-year bout with pancreatic cancer.

Fieger said Good, who often fielded people’s requests for Kevorkian’s assistance, had been counseling Summerlee ever since he called her a month ago.
