Dayla Wins Miss America Handicap
ALBANY, Calif. (AP) _ Dayla, a last-minute entrant, rallied from last in the field of six to a 2 1/2-length victory in Saturday’s $100,000 Miss America Handicap at Golden Gate Fields.
Dayla, ridden by Adalberto Lopez, covered a mile of turf in 1:37 2-5 in besting Pourquoi Pas in the test for fillies and mares aged 3 and up. The entry of Traces of Gold and Fleet Lady, sent off as the 1-2 favorite, was third and fourth.
Dayla paid $25.40, $10.80 and $2.10 for the biggest victory of her 37-race career. The $60,000 winner’s purse increased her lifetime earnings to $288,430.
``We entered this horse with 10 minutes left before they closed entries,″ trainer Chuck Jenda said. ``We needed to give her a race to get her ready for a race in the future. We had to start somewhere.″
Dayla, a 6-year-old former claimer, hadn’t started since Dec. 21.
Pourgoi Pas, with Agapito Delgadillo up, returned $14.80 and $2.10 and Traces of Gold paid $2.10.
