Rock Island officials investigating weekend fire

October 1, 2014

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (AP) — Investigators are continuing to review the cause of a weekend fire that destroyed or damaged a handful of buildings in downtown Rock Island.

The fire started early Saturday morning, destroying a vacant building that was scheduled for demolition and damaging seven others. Although investigators say they believe the fire broke out toward the back of the former Mississippi Cafe, the building that was destroyed, they are still reviewing evidence.

The (Moline) Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1rGuR1Z ) reports city officials are trying to help the fire victims get back on their feet. The affected business owners are also working with their insurance companies to begin the recovery process.

The fire destroyed the back half of the building that housed a tattoo shop, but Rock Island Fire Marshal Greg Marty says it may be salvageable. Other buildings were damaged by smoke, heat, water and falling debris.
