Texas Tech 62, La Salle 58
EL PASO, Texas (AP) _ Koy Smith scored 14 of his 23 points in the second half to help Texas Tech to a 62-58 comeback win over La Salle Thursday night in the consolation game of the Sierra Medical Center Sun Classic.
Texas Tech (8-1) used a 13-2 run late in the first half to overcome a nine-point La Salle (2-8) halftime lead. Smith hit two of his four 3-pointers on the night during the run.
The comeback ruined a strong effort from La Salle’s Romaine Haywood, who scored 13 of his 19 points in the first half to put La Salle out to the 32-23 halftime lead.
Three of Haywood’s first-half baskets were 3-pointers as La Salle hit a total of seven in the opening stanza.
Haywood’s third 3-pointer in the opening half started a 10-0 La Salle run in the final three minutes before intermission.
Tech suffered through dismal 25 percent shooting in the first half but managed to heat up to 52 percent in the second half behind Smith.
Texas Tech, undefeated coming into the tournament, avoided falling for the second time in two nights. Tech lost to Eastern Michigan here on Wednesday.
Tech’s Corey Carr had 16 points, 14 in the second half. La Salle’s Mike Gizzi and Shawn Smith were the only other players in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
